Grocery Shopping

Yesterday, I went on a mission to shop for a week’s worth of groceries. It was harder than I thought.

Since the hubby and I are very new to this world of shared finances, we still haven’t really figured out a budgeting system that would work for us. I went to the supermarket with a limit of 1,000php for our grocery. As I roamed around looking for cheap goods, It struck me. Was I  “extravagant”  before when it comes to buying for my personal consumption?

Case in Point: I cannot live a day without having green tea. When I was still living in my parents house, I would by a 150-peso ( 20’s) box of green tea. That was good enough for me. Besides, this particular tea taste really good; I feel like it’s worth the money. Yesterday was a different story though. I was about to buy the same brand of tea when I felt something heavy drilling in my pocket. Suddenly, 150php seemed so expensive for a morning drink. I had a choice – I could by my usual green tea fix and enjoy a good cup every morning, or look for a cheaper alternative and add another item in my cart. I went for the latter and walked out of the beverage isle without a tinge of regret.

But the misery does not end there. Did you know that even when you think vegetables are cheap, they could climb up the bill without you knowing? Yes, I threw a bunch of veggies into my cart thinking  I would be able to save more money that way. WRONG! My veggie items included:

  • 4 medium-sized cucumbers
  • 1 lettuce
  • 2 medium-sized bitter gourds (ampalaya)
  • 4 medium-sized potatoes
  • 5 small-sized eggplants
  • A bunch of string beans
  • 4 medium-sized sweet corn
  • Garlic, onion, tomatoes

Doesn’t seem like a lot, right? All these cost a little over 400php. I was surprised. I looked at my cart and realized I don’t even have meat products yet and already, I’ve consumed more than a quarter of my budget. I went to the wet section and got a quarter kilograms of pork and half kilograms of shrimp. I also tossed a few breakfast items like bread and oatmeal, as well as a few items for bath and laundry.

My total bill: 1,400

The items I got isn’t a lot if you come to think of it, but spending 1,400 for grocery items seems too much (for a frugal like me). I need an action plan. I would have to figure out what items to include next time that would fit the budget without compromising the quality.

In the meantime, thank God there’s food in the fridge! 🙂
